Spooky Sunday Gaming: Lemmings – the Level from HELL

Jeremy asked me to write the Gaming Article this week. This struck me as slightly absurd because, of course, I do not really play any games at all. Video games generally cause motion sickness in me, and those games I do maintain an interest in, I never actually get anywhere near completing. In fact, I don’t think I have EVER finished a game I have played. It is a matter of routine that I swiftly get bored with the idea and decide that the goal is stupid and then I play by my own rules and make some fun that way. This is why open-ended “games” like the Sims and Sim City and Horseland and other games like that have appealed to me. It’s enough like playing dolls or with little rectangular rocks in the driveway around puddles or something that my mind is pleased. The only exception I can think of, however, is the game known as Lemmings. That’s right, Lemmings. I will now give you a moment to dust off the memories in your brain.

For the benefit of any readers here who AREN’T as old as dirt, I will do a little describing of this bastard game. Lemmings was a puzzle game made in 1991 or so for the little computers of that era who really did try their best. It was occasionally used by middle school teachers in rural Ohio (and possibly other places as well, but I lived in a bubble back then much as I still do today) as a “reward” to students because it probably taught critical thinking skills and apparently also valuable lessons about humility, defeat, and frustration. The “lemmings” were so named because of the science-myth which teaches that lemmings are thoughtless herd rodents that will follow the lead lemming over cliffs and into the mouths of predators, because these game characters sure weren’t modeled after how lemmings ACTUALLY look.

Oh, how I wish it was this way.

The game lemmings looked a whole lot more like Fraggles mixed with those weird little Troll Dolls of the same time. I really do not know why. The lemmings’ world is a strange one where they are continually shoved into new environments where they need to be saved by you, the player. They plummet happily from a bizarre trapdoor in the ceiling, and then they just sort of walk in mindless rhythm until they walk off the level and die, are saved through some mysterious doorway, or are mercifully “nuked” courtesy of a decision the player has made. The levels, and I think there are a million of them, seem to be categorized as “fun,” “tricky,” “taxing,” and “mayhem.” Of course what these really translate to is: “boring,” “frustrating,” “impossible,” and “don’t even bother,” respectively. Sadly, I must admit that I have never fully completed all of the games in my little emulator here because it went from Boring to Frustrating much too quickly and after completing all of the “Tricky” levels, I had lost my will to live, and quite possibly, also my very soul.

I am not here to actually review the entire Lemmings game (even though I just basically did). I am here to tell you of one specific level that caused me so much anguish that I came very close to having an aneurysm there on the spot. The level went by the name of “I Have a Cunning Plan” and was among those in the “Tricky” category. It was DAMN NEAR impossible and it made me want to die.

Looks easy enough, at first.

And you know, it wasn’t THAT hard. You just had to build a little ladder to slow some of them down while one dug through the bottom of that pillar. But you couldn’t let any of them turn back because there was a meat-grinding torture device set up right there, eager for them to walk into it. Now, you could put a little lemming on guard duty, turning them back before they hit the spinning blades. However, the catch was that you had to save 100% of the lemmings on this level. 80% wouldn’t cut it. Not even 97% would pass you, as I found out 900 times over the course of this ill-fated day. I don’t even remember HOW I won it several years ago, the last time I ever played this game. I tried to go back today and screencap some of my methods in order to give the illiterate among you something to look at, and I really have no idea what on earth I had done.

Thankfully, I had saved the chatlog of this victory as I described it to Billy Holiday, AS IT WAS HAPPENING. And I happened to stumble across this log just like two days ago! So it was some sort of Fate that Jeremy asked me to write today, and I have MATERIAL SENT FROM GOD (aka me from 2006).

Because I don’t necessarily want this to be just another AIM Transcript Article, even though they are pure Grade A comedy gold, I will go ahead and summarize some things that were mostly filler anyway, as I failed over and over again. This horrible level had already been stumping me all day long when Mr Holiday appeared. I had actually looked up a “cheat” to this level:

Tricky 26: I Have a Cunning Plan

Use two bashers to get through the column and builders to keep the other lemmings occupied. Start mining in case any of the stairs is about to hit the middle column. (This is another difficult level that cannot be solved simply with an explanation.)

It just won

Amanda: I have tried it like 4574573456758 times and you have to save 80 out of 80 lemmings. VERY often, I have saved 79 of 80

Billy: Good god.

Amanda: I am about to shatter. My fury knows no limits. They come out one after the other, as fast as possible. Very often, the thing I use to aim hits the WRONG LEMMING. It is ridiculous.

As we see here, I was at my basic level of anger. It is how I would say I am most of the time when I am playing any sort of game that has a goal, or whenever I am writing an article or doing a chore. Providing any sort of service at all fills me with this level of annoyance. It is consequently why I do not hold any sort of job that involves me having to make anyone happy, probably. Anyway, a short while later, I reached a new level of defeat:

Amanda: I don’t understand this. I could have sworn none of them died. NONE OF THEM! But it still says I only saved 97%!

Billy: Are you turning on Linkin Park now?

Amanda: I am going to End It All. I watched the Replay and one of those fuckers hit the step wrong and turned the wrong way.

Billy: !!! How does that make you feel?

Amanda: I don’t want to sell my soul just for a lemmings level, but it is getting close to that kind of desperation. It is the Saddest Day.

Satan watched the game as I played it, chuckling, ready to Collect.

After my white hot rage, I found myself in the throes of denial. Certain that my constant failure had nothing to do with ME, I was creating an alternate universe in my mind where the game simply did not work. There was one single grain of possibility that this was the case, and I planted that grain into the fertile soil of my strained imagination. It began to sprout into a lovely plant which would later be harvested for nourishment, and it would have if I had not continued playing. The continued defeat started to turn me into a raving Conspiracy Theorist. I have read reports that the Conspiracy-minded folk are all people who at heart feel that they have no control over their lives, so they begin to create paranoid conspiracies of blame. It supposedly grants these people some sort of relief to know that their lives are not ENTIRELY their own fault while at the same time making them unhappy and ANGERED UP at this same thing. Eventually this leads to some sort of Broken Acceptance. Watch it in action:

Amanda: I am certain that this fucker is just broken. Why the fuck would one fucking lemming land and then walk the opposite direction?! The direction NO OTHER lemmings are walking in?!

Billy: They are mindless.

Amanda: Just to go into the meat grinder! WHY!?! No. This is more than that. This is a PLOT. A plot to drive me into the Devil’s arms!!! Although I imagine that if I summoned the devil and he tried to get past this level, he, too, would be thwarted. Because it is BROKEN AND IMPOSSIBLE!

Billy: Who would the devil turn to?

Amanda: The devil would break my computer take my soul and be in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

Suddenly...

Amanda: OHHHH. I JUST WON IT. … I didn’t sell my soul did I? Now I am worried.

Billy: You may have… You may very well have. Though if you sold your soul you would have beaten the level.

Amanda: What? I DID beat the level. I feel like I have climbed a mountain.

Billy: Oh no! Enjoy this life while you can. You’ve done the unforgiven. I must go. I don’t want to be anywhere around this.

That’s right, thrilled readers. I DID beat that god damned level! It was a sudden, unexpected victory and I was left feeling not entirely satisfied. I do not recall signing any infernal contracts in my own blood, nor making any bad kinds of promises, so I don’t THINK I actually sold anything like my soul to anyone like the devil. I suppose I will find out for certain in the Hereafter, but I will be VERY disappointed in myself if I did such a thing over a Lemmings level, no matter how difficult it was.

I figure some day I may try the so-called “Taxing” level of those games, but certainly not within the next decade, I imagine. That last level really took it out of me and I have only just recently begun enjoying life again.

I hate this game.

    Game was addicting as hell when I was a kid. Always had this strange completist attitude with it so I forced myself to go through each level with a perfect score. Even that awful 3D Lemmings game got me under it’s spell.

    3D Lemmings was okay. A good idea that didn’t have the technology to do it well yet.

    I could never get into lemmings. Maybe because I am terrible at it. I actually had more fun watching them die in various ways. Why would I ever want to finish a level when I could blow them all up and hear their screams of lemming pain? They deserve it any way.
