Humpday Gaming: The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang

by Jeremy

Spike McFang is just stupid. But stupid in a good way. It was one of those SNES games that really only stood out for being completely strange on every level. Essentially what you get is your typical top-down action RPG that Zelda and Secret of Mana had made famous for years. In that regard, Spike McFang is nothing too special. Sure it’s fun, but it’s not until you get into the actual storyline and characters that you realize that you’re dealing with something that may be worth more than a ten second glance at your local video store.

So what’s so weird about Spike Mcfang? Well, just about everything. You play as Spike McFang, who is an heir to Dracula. Yes, THE Dracula. Only unlike Dracula, this guy is about as creepy as a cute chibi anime guy with a giant red hat and a cape can be. So you’re rolling around in your baller ass Dracula Car, when you stumble across a young girl that needs you to save her castle from a woman dressed as a cat that throws very real cats at you as weapons. And no, I swear I’m not on PCP. And from there… well, I couldn’t much tell you. I’m sure there’s an overarching storyline, but it’s so out there and completely worthless that it’s not worth mentioning. Just be content that you’ll never be wanting for interesting situations and characters in Spike McFang.

(I apologize for the ad in this video but it was literally the only Spike McFang video on Youtube that didn’t have some asshole talking over the gameplay).

Besides the insanity of it all, Spike McFang is totally fun to play. The controls allow you to get around easily enough, and the game moves along at a brisk pace. Spike can throw his trusty hat at enemies for a long range attack, or just use his cape spin as a short range attack. And after the first part of the game, you get an AI character that fights with you that can be picked up at any time by a second player. And honestly, Spike McFang really shines as a co-op game. It also helps that you can occasionally ask your friend if you’re really seeing the mind-bending Japanese insanity on the screen, or if you are suddenly succumbing to a flash fever.

So yeah, hey kids, go play Spike McFang. It’s totally fun. Not only for the super weirdness, but also for the really great fun that far too few overhead action RPGs couldn’t get right for some reason. And Spike McFang is just such a cool little character.

Dracula would be proud.
