Netflix Instant Queue Fridays: Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon

First off, let me say that I love Ren and Stimpy. It is probably my favorite cartoon ever. It was one of the most brilliantly random shows ever created. And for those that think it was all about fart and gross-out jokes… you’re only partly right. While those things definitely existed, it was more so the clever writing, the way more mature than kids subject matter, and its incredibly dark humor that really set it apart. And while it did taper off in quality as each season went by, it was clear that nothing would ever top the insanity that the original Ren and Stimpy episodes had created.

With that said, I bring you this pile of shit series.  The idea is that it would finally show people what Ren and Stimpy was supposed to be when it originally aired. It is well-documented that Nickelodeon fought tooth and nail over many of the original episodes (many of which only aired once), and a lot of the subject matter was heavily censored. This new series on Spike would correct all of this, giving you an unfiltered view into the mind of John Kricfalusi, the creator of the characters and series. What we get instead, is more akin to taking the corpse of a once great thing, and flailing it around in the hopes that people won’t know the difference. Then add in a ton of tits and gay references, and you’ve got a show that pales so much in comparison to the original that it was almost painful to watch just a few episodes. If this is the original vision of Mr. John K., then maybe he should have thanked the Gods that Nickelodeon stepped in as much as they did.

So yes. Watch an episode of this, and then find the original series (also on instant watch), and check out Stimpy’s Invention, Marooned, or Son of Stimpy. I think you’ll see the difference. And maybe also pick up a new appreciation for just how groundbreaking Ren and Stimpy was at the time.
