Netflix Instant Queue Fridays: Memories

by Jeremy

Goddamnit you better go fucking sit your ass down on your favorite piece of shit furniture, fire up Netflix, and watch this masterpiece of animation. And while you watch it, you should sit there and realize that you are completely unworthy to watch the animated perfection taking place in front of you. Memories is quite simply, one of the finest collections of animated shorts ever made. To sit here and say that I would recommend this to you is doing it an injustice. This is essentially me grabbing you by the neck, and choking you until you watch it.

What is Memories? It is a few short films combined into one awe-inspiring package. The first of which is the real highlight. Involving a derelict spacecraft, and a crew sent to investigate it. what happens over the course of the next thirty or so minutes is so mind-bendingly crazy that it still shocks me to this day. Not to mention the absolute mastery of hand drawn animation that takes place in every single frame. This is watching a true master of his craft at the height of his ability. Every single detail, every facial expression is so well animated that it is utterly sad that we will never see anything like this again thanks to cg animation.

So yes. Watch this movie. Just sit back and let it blow your mind to pieces, because that’s what will happen anyway. I can’t believe it is to this day one of the not so well-known anime movies. It’s a travesty that you can right with just a couple hours of your free time. Do me proud, people. Don’t make me have to choke you out.

Man I tried watching this last night and the first thing almost put me to sleep. I’ll try to finish the others today.

ATTN ALL: THIS GOES OFF INSTANT WATCH ON LIKE SEPT 1, SO HURRY.

I think this might be great if you like the whole anime genre in the first place, but it is usually too.. like.. everything takes forevverrrr I guess because we are all supposed to be mesmerized by its grandeur or something but I usually start paying more attention to the shape of the tv screen or dust motes in the air or imagining the tick tock of the incredibly slow passage of time which these films seem to make slow to a painful crawl.

Why can’t they make these incredibly beautiful and well-drawn and INTERESTING? Can’t they do both? :C

I guess at least it isn’t boring and ugly.

    THERE’S *MY* REVIEW OF MEMORIES.

To be honest, I didn’t like this collection either. I watched it some time back, and I still vividly remember my reaction to each of the stories, so I’ll address them in order.

Magnetic Rose: Overly contrived for being so simplistic. This had a cool theme, and should have been explored further, but unfortunately the story writers went the direction of turning a cool sci-fi concept into just another horror flick. There was no real intrigue here. Once you get down to the fact that this is just intended to be a ghost attack in a sci-fi setting it runs out of steam. Nothing special here. I remember wondering if the idea was to hook people with the possibility of a good science fiction story on the box cover, and they just didn’t care about coming up with a follow through.

Cannon Fodder: I don’t get this one. I understand that it is supposed to be artistic, and that it is probably meant to be a critique of war, but I just can’t get behind this style of design. It always struck me as flat ugly, and I couldn’t get past that, even if it was ugly for a reason. Granted I don’t remember much about the plot, but I believe that that was because it was very slow and uneventful. I just recall a lot of cannons being fired back and forth. Needless to say, it didn’t grab me regardless of what the underlying theme was supposed to be.

Stink Bomb: This is just silly, but actually I liked this one the most. It had a decent plot development, and you could tell exactly where it was going and what it was doing, unlike Cannon Fodder. It certainly was more inventive than Magnetic Rose. My main problem with this one, however, is that like the others it suffers from being extremely boring once you figure out what you are watching, due to being completely two dimensional. This one brings in another problem, however, in being a little bit childish and ridiculous. If you like that kind of humor, then this could be for you, but it doesn’t work for me. I remember my main interest through the whole thing was just to see if the kid would manage to get through the military, and how he would manage it. Not much there, but it tops the other two.

So, my final feelings on this collection are that I would have liked to see a little more effort. I don’t think it would have killed them to throw in a little mystery or twist here or there. Instead they banked on pretty art work and gimmick scenery.

I forgot to watch the other two.
