I do a lot of work with my hands that I find is just easier if you have some sort of background noise on. For just this reason Netflix is the best thing that has ever happened to my productivity. I can just pick some random bullshit TV series and let it run a few hours without caring too much about quality. However, when I picked Nip/Tuck for a giant project based on the fact a few seasons were fully available, I had no idea what kind of a hellpit I had just crawled into.

Nip/Tuck follows the story of these two plastic surgeons who are best friends since college and have built a practice together from the ground up. One is an insufferable self-absorbed lady’s man and the other is a semi-boring family man with a wife and two children. Sounds pretty okay right? A sort of decent premise? It actually is. The first and second season are incredibly solid, and you are only just beginning to hate the son character by the end of season 2.

Season 3… season 3 is where it goes off the deep end. Shit stops making sense period and everyone is just a giant unbearable shit to each other. For some reason I still can’t figure out why I continued to watch. I think it had the same effect Maury does since every single character is just fucking each other crazy and one of the big reveals in the last season was that the life coach that was fucking the son character (and her own adopted son) was a secret tranny.

But season 3 episode 11 is just incredible. In this episode there is a girl who is a bit chubby, looking to be altered surgically so she can be “beautiful.” The philanderer doctor, imagining himself abandoned at the altar on his wedding day, has some serious bitterness against women to work out and so is really harsh with her and later, after her recovery invited her over to his apartment.

After watching that scene in silence, I set my work down slowly, stood and gave a cheer that scared my cat out of the living room. I do not think I have ever seen something in a TV series that has had me laughing so hard I cried in my entire life.

I blame this episode for the fact I am still watching this horrible show well into the 4th season. Even though the wife has had sex with a midget nanny and a soldier killed his wife’s dog because she was fucking it while he was deployed, I don’t blame it for ruining me. I continue to hold on in the off chance there might be a single scene as great as the paper bag one. Possibly right to the end.
